For those who haven’t heard… there is a new filler available in the United States!

The FDA recently approved this hyaluronic-acid filler, known as Belotero, which can be used to treat moderate-severe facial wrinkles and folds. Belotero has been used for years in Europe and Canada, and it is very similar to other hyaluronic fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane. However, there are some key differences you should know about.

Continue Reading to find out what you should know about Belotero

#1. Belotero is for superficial wrinkles and folds.
The main difference between Belotero and other products like Juvederm and Restylane, is that Belotero is designed to help treat superficial lines and wrinkles that are closer to surface of the skin. This is important because other HA fillers, like Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane, can produce a bluish hue under the skin if they are injected too superficially. This is called the Tyndall Effect, and can be a significant problem when inexperienced practitioners are doing the injections. The problem has supposedly been solved with Belotero, but everyone should remember that the Tyndall Effect occurs very rarely in the hands of experienced injectors.

#2. Belotero may last longer than other HA fillers.
The key word here is “may”. Most HA filler manufacturers say that their products last up to 12 months, but in reality, very few of them actually do. The average amount of time that most HA fillers last is 3-4 months. The company that makes Belotero says that it lasts 6-12 months on average, compared to 6-8 months with Juvederm. Time will tell if this is true or not…

Side Effects of Belotero.
The most common side effects from Belotero, and other hyaluronic acid fillers, are bruising, swelling, and redness around the area that was treated.  This is common after any injection, and usually resolves after about 1 week. It is also possible to develop an allergic reaction to the filler, but this is extremely rare.

The Bottom Line about Belotero.
Overall, Belotero may fill a gap in the filler industry by allowing practitioners to use it to treat superficial fine lines without having to worry about the possibility of the bluish hue. This quality may make Belotero useful for treating superficial lines between the eyes, around the mouth, or under the eyes where the skin is thin and the Tyndall Effect is more common.

How can I get more information about Belotero?

Xeomin
Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA), made by Merz Pharmaceuticals,  is approved by the US FDA for the treatment of adults with cervical dystonia or blepharospasm.  IncobotulinumtoxinA is made from the bacteria that causes botulism. Botulinum toxin blocks nerve activity in the muscles, causing a temporary reduction in muscle activity.

FDA approval of XEOMIN,  was based on the results of two U.S. clinical trials. A study cited in the Journal of Neurological Sciences on the efficacy and safety of XEOMIN found it showed “non-inferiority” to Botox when used in the same doses to treat cervical dystonia. It concluded that XEOMIN is a safe and effective treatment for the disorder.

Xeomin is not yet approved for any cosmetic indications. By contrast, other drugs in this category, including Botox and Dysport, do have FDA approval for the treatment of facial wrinkles. Now that Xeomin is available and FDA approved, doctors can use it off-label to treat the same facial lines treated by Botox and Dysport, including frown lines, crow's feet and forehead wrinkles.

Worldwide, more than 84,000 people have been treated with Xeomin injections. The U.S. is actually the 20th country to approve this new drug. It will be available in 50-unit and 100-unit vials.

Better or worse then Botox?

Xeomin is the first one that does not need to be refrigerated before use, which may simplify distribution. Xeomin is also has no additives, just botulinum toxin type A. This may mean that there is less risk of developing antibodies against Xeomin than other available neurotoxins. The body develops antibodies in response to a foreign invader and attacks. In theory, antibodies could prevent a neurotoxin from having its desired effects. The effects of Xeomin occur within one week, and the results last from three to six months, making it comparable to Botox in terms of both onset and duration of action. Xeomin should not be used interchangeably with other botulinum products.

What are the risks?

There is a risk that all botulinum toxin products may spread from the area where they were injected to other parts of the body, causing potentially life-threatening swallowing and breathing problems. This was predominantly seen in children treated with Botox off-label for cerebral palsy. These issues have not been reported among people who received botulinum products for cosmetic uses or to treat blepharospasm.

Other risks may include bleeding and bruising at the injection site and allergic reactions such as itching, swelling or shortness of breath. Your doctor should discuss all the potential risks of this procedure with you during your consultation.

When Xeomin is used to treat cervical dystonia, side effects include neck pain, muscle weakness, injection site pain and musculoskeletal pain. When used to treat blepharospasm, the most common side effects of Xeomin were eyelid sagging, dry eye, dry mouth, diarrhea, headache, visual impairment, shortness of breath (dyspnea), and upper respiratory infections.

How much does Xeomin cost?

Xeomin cost will likely be comparable to Botox if not slightly lower. Exact price points are not yet available since Xeomin was so recently approved for use in the U.S. If your doctor suggests Xeomin, make sure to get accurate pricing information before booking your appointment.

Xeomin Injections – Are You a Candidate?

First there was Botox, then there was Dysport, and now there is Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved this new botulinum toxin type A product to treat severe frown lines or "11's" between the eyebrows. Xeomin was already FDA approved for use in adults with cervical dystonia and blepharospasm. Cervical dystonia is characterized by abnormal neck pain and movements, and blepharospasm is marked by abnormal, involuntary blinking or spasm of the eyelids. Xeomin is manufactured by Merz Pharmaceuticals, and has been used by more than 84,000 people worldwide. It is now approved for use in 20 countries.
Like other drugs in this category, Xeomin works by paralyzing wrinkles. It blocks the signals from the nerves to the muscles. As a result, the targeted muscle cannot contract.
Xeomin versus Botox and Dysport
Botox, Dysport and Xeomin have a lot in common, but they also have some important differences. Unlike its predecessors, Xeomin does not need to be refrigerated. This may be an advantage when it comes to distribution. What's more, Xeomin is "naked." There are no additives — just botulinum toxin type A. This may lessen a patient's likelihood of developing antibodies to Xeomin. When your body senses a foreign invader, it responds by creating antibodies and launching an attack. If this were to occur with a neurotoxin such as botulinum toxin type A, it may not have its desired effects.
Xeomin is said to be more like Botox than Dysport. It takes about one week for the full effects of Xeomin injections to be realized, and once this occurs the results last from three to six months. Dysport, Xeomin and Botox should not be used interchangeably. They should also only be administered by skilled injectors such as board-certified facial plastic surgeons in sterile environments such as medi-spas or doctors’ offices. Xeomin should not be injected in beauty salons, malls or at Xeomin parties in the home.
If you are interested in Xeomin injections, consult with a facial plastic surgeon to explore your candidacy. Be sure to choose a qualified surgeon with extensive experience providing various types of injectables. It can often be difficult to sort through all the hype to find a surgeon you can trust. To help in your search, All About Facial Rejuvenation has developed a directory of highly trained, reputable surgeons with years of experience performing a range of facial plastic surgery procedures. To find a surgeon near you, click here or on the right side of this page.
Xeomin Complications
Like other botulinum products, Xeomin must carry a black box warning regarding a rare risk for spreading outside of the injection site. If this occurs, life-threatening swallowing and breathing problems may result. This has not been seen in people receiving neurotoxins for cosmetic reasons or to treat blepharospams. It has mainly occurred among children treated off-label for cerebral palsy-related muscle spasms. Other general Xeomin risks may include:
Bleeding and bruising at the injection site
Allergic reactions such as itching, swelling or shortness of breath.
Your doctor should discuss all the potential Xeomin risks with you during your consultation. Possible Xeomin side effects when this neurotoxin is used to treat cervical dystonia may include:
Neck pain
Muscle weakness
Injection site pain
Musculoskeletal pain.
Xeomin side effects when used to treat blepharospasm may include:
Eyelid sagging (ptosis)
Dry eye
Dry mouth
Diarrhea
Headache
Visual impairment
Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
Upper respiratory infections.
Xeomin Cost
Xeomin will likely cost $400 to $600 for a standard treatment. The costs are expected to be similar to Botox cost. That said, exact price points are not yet available given the recent approval of Xeomin. Ask your doctor for the Xeomin cost before your treatment.
