But now a research scholar of Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Helene Johannessen has come up with a discovery that Botox can also be used efficiently for fat elimination. Thus it now offers a new avenue to treat obesity sans the expenses and side effects involved in traditional treatments.
Conducting experiments with rats convinced the researchers that injecting Botox in the vagus nerve could help weight loss. On administering the injection, animals treated lost weight in the range of 20%-30% in just five weeks time. Core factor in the process is that when Botox is injected it will paralyze vagus nerve blunting the passion for hunger.
In an interview with the NRK, Johannessen said “As a start, we will be inviting patients who are candidates for obesity operations but who, for one reason or another cannot undergo one.” She firmly believes that Botox has the potential to revolutionize treatments for obesity.
